I am trying to figure out what year this motor is. Serial number BABS-1100514. I've talked to a guy at a Honda store and he said it was a BF9.9AK but AK is for models after 2007... according to what I've been able to find. This is definitely not a shiny silver motor, it is white with a red stripe around it. I am trying to figure out which service manual I need to get.
Motor has been sitting for 2 years but started up second pull. Wasnt peeing water (was easy fix, small clog in the grommet exiting the housing) and the throttle wire (looks like someone used an old metal coat hanger) was only pulling throttle to half so we shortened it a bit. Started it it again and it revved high so we shut it down because the throttle wire was a bit to short. Fixed that. Started it again and it developed a puffing noise inside which moved to a full backfire out of the carb intake. (About 45sec of running time from puffing noise to backfire) Strong enough you can see the housing bend and warp when it does it, which is very frequent. Will have 5-10 sec periods of smooth running. Pulled carb off and it only had a little varnish in it. Used carb cleaner and shot it through everything (I think) replaced spark plugs. Still need to replace engine oil. (It is black as night) so, looking for the correct year so we can get the correct repair manual to troubleshoot.
