Looks like I'll be buying the impellar replace kit for my 2006 Honda 9.9. Can anyone give me step by step tips on how this is done? I replaced my water pump and power steering pump on my Ford pickup last month, hopefully this won't be as challenging. Thanks for any help...Bob

Re: Honda 9.9 Impellar Replace, How To Do???

Step one: put it in reverse
Step two: about 1/2 down the leg you will see a threaded shaft w/a small regular size nut (10MM) and a larger one about 3/4" long also 10mm. Back off the small jam nut just enough to allow the long nut to unthread and disconnect the shaft. The rest will come out when you drop the lower end.
Step three: Take the four 10/12mm bolts loose, leave one attached to hold the lower end until you are ready to handle it, then take the 4th bolt out.
step four: take the 4 small bolts loose that holds the pump housing in place and remove the housing. You will need to replace the gasket. Look for the key way and make sure you get it back in place. Look at the old impeller and reinstall the new one bent/curved in the same direction, reassemble, you are done.

Easy.Shift the unit to reverse then look about half way down the exhaust housing and you will see a shift shaft coupler with a locknut under it.Both 10mm.Hold the top coupler and loosen the lock nut but disturb it as little as possible, then back the coupler off, remove the 5 10mm bolts holding the gearcase on,a couple taps on the tailstock with a soft hammer and the gearcase is down.Water pump is now right there wrapped around the driveshaft. If you lift that housing off and find the impeller with missing vanes at all you had better look very carefully at the housing as well.Any indication of distortion or meltage and that hssy is toast. At this point I'dd do the complete kit anyway.Get that far and we'll keep going.

Gss...I'm alittle stuck here: Re Step 2, do I remove the side covers to get to the threaded shaft? Otherwise, I can't locate this shaft. Now in Step 3, are these 4 bolts holding the lower end the "upside down" ones? Do I need to drain the gear oil first? Thanks...Bob

Please remember 5 bolts. You will have one long bolt reccessed at the rear and under the cavitation plate as well as the 4 in plain sight.Look just above the prop and a little forward and you will see it.It comes from the bottom up the same as the others just a little longer.

OK....I've got everything in sight. My only concern is the gear oil once I drop the lower end. Will it spill out all over or is this not a problem? I went to the Honda shop today, ugh! I think I'll order the kit online...Bob

No the oil will not come out. If it does then you have a problem. Honda parts are expensive, but the impeller and gasket was less than $25 last year when I did mine. Look here, don't if that is your motor but can't be much different. All you need is the kit. No reason for a new housing etc, uless is your is ruined.

Re: Honda 9.9 Impellar Replace, How To Do???

Took everything apart as above. My impellar was missing all vanes. I cleaned out all the debri. Went down to the Honda Marine store and purchased the correct impellar. Installed it, everything fit back together nicely, fired her up and no water out the p-hole! Since the pliable impellar vanes are bigger than the housing it sits in, I had to bend them to accomodate the housing. Question: did I bend them the wrong way? I didn't think that would matter since the impellar has to function in Reverse and Forward. Any help would be greatly appreciated...Bob

I fixed it! Water now coming out the p-hole! What I failed to do as I was inserting the bottom end back in place was to make sure the water line was in place. It can be easily bumped out of the way. Thanks again to those who helped and prayed...Bob
