honda 9.9 - how to figure out year

i'm going to look at a boat this weekend with a honda 9.9hp 4-stroke on it. it's a 2001 boat bought new in 2002. when i look at the engine, how can i quickly tell if it's a 2001 or 2002? something to look for in the serial number?<br /><br />thanks-

When I asked Honda USA, they said the serial number codes did NOT have any "intelligence" built into them to determine model year - seems strange to me.<br /><br />At any rate, if you have the serial number, you can call and they can look it up manually.
