Honda 9.9 2003 water cooling problem

I just bought a Honda 9.9 2003 model that had never been used. I started it up (fired on first pull) after changing the oil and running clean gas throught the fuel system a few times. I hooked up a dual sided flushing system to the water intake ports. I could't see any telltale water stream indicateing that the cooliong system was working so shut off the motor. I then purchased a Honda flushing adapter that screws in a port under the engine cowl. I turned the water on and the cooling water streams were all working great - thought there may have been a temporary blockage internally. I then replaced the dual flushing device over the water intake ports, turned on the water supply and restarted the engine - still no water stream indicating proper water cooling.

Can anyone give me some advice on what I should do next? Thanks in advance.

Re: Honda 9.9 2003 water cooling problem

Were you over heating? Did you get water flow on the pee hole when you first ran it or did it stop when put the flush adaptor on? Run it is a barrell of water to see if the water impleller is working. If not pull the line loose from the inside of the cowling to make sure it is open, maybe try blowing air or water back through w/a hose. Pull the thermostat and check it, might be stuck. Last resort you may have to change the water pump impeller.

Re: Honda 9.9 2003 water cooling problem

Thanks for the comment. I ran it initially only with the flush adapter on (both sides of the water inlet ports near the prop were covered with the adapter). When I didn't see a water stream I turned the engine off before it could overheat. I then purchased the hose adapter for the Honda - it screws into a port under the housing. Everything looked to be open when the water was turned on - water stream and water out of the inlet holes and near the prop. When I used the flushing adapter at the water inlet ports again, I saw no stream and turned the motor off.

I'll follow your advice this weekend and check the action of thewater pump impeller.

Again, Thanks for your response.

I also have a 9.9 2000 4 stroke honda. I have to change the impeller every year and I use this motor about 4 or 5 hours a year. I use the dealer parts and the old one looks good. Any sugestions? Catfishjon

Re: Honda 9.9 2003 water cooling problem

The issue with these small motors (9.9-15) is the design must have issues. I have the same motor on my sailboat and it gets used 40-50hrs a year. I also have to replace the impeller every year. It always looks good but obviously isn't sealing well.

Last year I changed the entire assy.... we'll see how that goes. I did notice that the part number had been superceeded, so perhaps they figured out something was wrong.

And if you use the flushing adaptor from Honda it tells you nothing about the pump....

If it won't pick up from rabbit ears it's defective. Been there and done that. with a good pump it picks up from rabbit ears (even the cheapo ones) very quickly.
