I recently purchased a 14ft alum-v hull with this decent "looking " honda 8hp motor-no one around here seems to know much about these-the closest I could come to the age was the numbers on transom bracket are 1000584-which the local dealer said means it started production in 87 and stayed the same till 98??surely some one can help me pinpoint abit closer?? it has a grey shaft with white hood with red stripe--??? has a kill switch and a cute green lite that comes on when started?/ my other question what is this lite telling me? good or bad? oil level in crank is good-[and clean] any feed back regarding this would be most apreciated

I have a Honda 5hp and the green light is an oil pressure light. IT IS NORMAL for the light to stay on when running the motor. If the light goes out that means it is loosing oil pressure.

Bill Martin

Hi

I've 10hp Honda with the same green light. It means that you have oil pressure. It also is a good tell-tale for the electrics. From your colour discription, I'm thinking your unit is later than 1986. Mine has a white top and blue lower section ,it also has CDI in really big type. The in-service date is 86, but built anytime between 84 to 86. Apparently Honda would do production runs as required, then sell them until they ran out.

David

I've got my 10HP on a Meyer 14ft aluminum. Pretty small boat. Throttle is overly sensitive, idle and fly. The newer units are also quiter as the exhaust is through the prop. I have to put the gas can as far forward as possible to help balance the weight and sometimes extra weights to bring the bow down. The configuration idles along at about 3 or 4 knots, a little fast. Had it out recently for a picture cruise, go here, click-click-click, go there etc... Two hours later the tank was still on fuel, its a dream compared to my 70hp Merc.

If you actually have a long-shaft setup, you may be able to shorten it. A kit was available from Honda to bolt in an extra 6 or 8 inches of leg. Shouldn't be a problem to remove.

Have fun
