hi, i have a 8hp 4 stroke honda circa 1985 maybe later but it has no flushing plug unlike other honda models of same time but different hp. i have the engine on the back of my 24 ft macwester sailing boat and its alittle heavy to haul on and off to flush. it is used in salt water all the time. is it useful for me to fresh water flush the engine backwards through the tell tale tbe because i have done this and water escapes freely from the intake. is the water getting to all parts of the system. i would be very grateful for suggestions/help. thanks, mark turner

I haven't done it but I've heard (or read) that some in your situation hang a bucket or something around the lower unit and run a hose to that.

Do'nt backflush this engine at either the telltale or the idle releif or in my expierience ,you will at some point end up with a crankcase full of watery oil.Get the flush device made for your unit and tape it tightly in place, then turn the hose on ,run the unit out of fuel ,which you should be doing anyway, remove the device, and thats about all you can do.

I use a home made bucket to rinse the motor. Having lost two motors to salt, I rinse every time; but I don't know if this is really necessary.
I made a bucket 24" long by splicing two 5 gal. together with four little machine screws and lots of
caulking. Use a heat gun to shape bucket to your motor.
With one line to the bail and one line thru the bottom, using the boat hook, you can maneuver the bucket over the motor. The line thru the bottom is to empty and retreive the bucket.
I would love to hear of an easier way.
