Had trouble with my 1999 8hp honda and took apart the carb and cleaned it up . ran well about 6 or 7 times and now I have a similer problem . I could start it and run it for a good 20 minutes . Shut it down and restart it , but then the next day I could not get it to start . I'm thinking of just getting a new carb and changing the old one out . Any suggestions ?

How was the fuel sample you took out of that fuel source? Are you on a permenent or remote fuel source? How old is that fuel? After doing that carb work, are you sure no lines are pinched? Is this an 8a or an 8d?

The fuel is about 1 month old now , its from a remote tank . I did not sample or check it .No pinched lines , and the motor is an 8a. Tried to start it again today , no luck . Would bad or contaminated fuel make it act like this ?

When you are trying to start it, is the oil light flickering? I'm thinking you are having a fuel issue. As in no fuel in the carb when you try to start it. Also, did you blow air through all the little ports? You removed the idle jet and blew air down the hole?
Before you try to start it the next day, loosen he float bowl drain and see if here is fuel in there.

Also, if you can start it with some choke applied, but it doesn't idle, check the low speed jet that (at least on my BF8M) is easy to unscrew from the top of the carb. Whenever I have idle or starting problems, if I remove and clean the jet down the center, it has always helped. That orifice is really small and seems to be prone to clogging. I also use StaBil in every tank, and run the carb dry by unhooking the fuel line and letting it run until it stops.

Re: Honda 8hp Carb

Thanks for the help . I do have gas in the carb , when I loosen the screw it flows out . I did unscrew the idle jet , but did not blow air into the carb from there , is that what you suggest ? I did clean the hole on the jet itself , but it appeared clean. The green light does flicker when trying to start...its getting colder now , so I may remove the carb and take it to the basement and see if I can see anything wrong. One more question , I had heard that some carb cleaners can damage toe Honda carbs . I had sprayed gumout into this one when I had the original problem , could that be it ? Thanks !

Re: Honda 8hp Carb

What I meant is to remove the idle jet and clean the hole down the center of the jet itself. If that doesn't help, maybe remove the carb, take it apart and soak the metal parts (no plastic or rubber, like o rings) in the real carb dip, and then try blowing out the passages in the carb body, and then use the spray type carb cleaner through all the passages, including those in the jets. There is another jet inside the carb that I think is the high speed jet, that you can only access if you remove the carb. Now, if you only ever have issues starting it or idling, and it runs fine at higher speeds, I would think it is NOT the high speed jet.
