Honda 8 hp 4 stroke. How do you tell what year the motor is?

I got a nice tax refund. My wife wants a new washer and I need a new motor. I found a Honda 8 hp 4 stroke. The guy says its a year old, my wife says its 4 years old. If she is right she gets a washer and I get nothing. How do you tell what year the motor is?

By the serial number.I do'nt have the info here at home to cross those numbers but put them out there and we'll get back to you.Is this an 8 classic or an 8D?
