My three year old 75 h.p. 4 Stroke Honda was screming hot after running it at 4500 rpm without noticing that the over-temp light was on. Pulled the lower unit off to examine the w/p impeller and noticed that the impeller was stripped off of the brass bushing that it is molded to, in addition to it being split (as if it was cut in a manner to remove it from the brass bushing. <br />the water pump housing was in new condition as well as all other aspects. This engine really does not have that much time on it (less than 30 hours)and is used mostly in fresh water and even is flushed out after using in fresh water. It has Never been started or cranked dry for any reason. Has anyone else came across this type of water pump impeller failure on such a low hour Honda ??

Not that many hours, but the impeller itself has 3 years on it regardless. I replace mine every two seasons as cheap insurance. Could be a bum impeller from the factory, or a piece of kelp or other debis plugged water intake briefly and cooked it. Hope you get more time out of the new one! :)

Have you ever run the engine dry out of the water? Even short periods will put the hoodoo on the rubber impeller.

Never started or attempted to start the engine at any time without water. I asked the selling/servicing dealer (where I bought replacement parts) if they had ever ran across this and was told that they had seen it on three occasions. Mine being the third. I prodded them further and was told that there were some impellers that were not bonded properly to the brass hubs. Will be writing Honda Marine on this one. Took the boat out for a 96 mile run through the intracoastal the following weekend after the overheat and it runs as good as new. Honda makes very tough outboards.
