I am a newbie when it comes to these Honda 4-Stroke outboards so please forgive my ignorance if I ask a dumb question.

I mentioned to a buddy the other day how I'd like to upgrade my kicker motor from a 2-stroke Evinrude to a 4-stroke to save some space. I figured I could tie the 4-stroke into my main boat fuel tank and not have to tote a separate tank of mixed fuel around with me ( my boat is Mercruiser powered). His reply was that he had an older Honda 7.5 Hp that I could have, free, just get it out of his garage. So I took him up on the offer and brought home what I believe is a 1973 Honda B75 K1 model (SN BF7-2006971). It needs a little help but I am not a stranger to outboard repair so I thought I would give it a whirl and see what I could do with it. I haven't got anything to lose right?

I have been doing my reading and understand that there is the B series and the BF series of these motors and I also understand the parts sourcing problems associated with both series of motors. Mechanicals all seem to be quite solid but it will need some carburetor help. My largest concern is the prop shaft gear housing and it's broken skeg. I've had it to the local prop shop to get an estimate for repair but they strongly suggested a gear housing replacement. So I began my search and while I did find some of the proper part numbers, they were truly cost prohibitive to even consider. I did however find a few of the BF series gear housings quite reasonable. So, I've come to my questions: can the blue BF series gear housings be used on the earlier B series 7.5 Hp outboards? Were all of the B75 gear housings white or where there some that were blue? If yes, how do I tell them apart?

Thanks and regards,
