I have a Honda 5hp outboard. At half to full revs while powering my dinghy, the revs raise and the boat slows. ie. it appears the sheer pin has gone or the prop is slipping. Its like a clutch slipping on a car. It doesn't jump out of gear. When I drop the revs to one quarter, the prop starts moving the boat. Anyone have any idea what the problem is.

Re: Honda 5hp

If this is a new developement it is probably a spun hub in the prop You can pull the prop and mark across the underside of the hub with an indelable marker then run the motor and observe the mark .Usually a prop shop can repair the prop.

Re: Honda 5hp

This is my first post here. I have been posting for years on other boards, but just found this one.

My Honda 5hp has recently died from electrolysis/corrosion & lots of hours. This motor does not have the rubber hub like other motors. When the shear pin breaks, it is as if the motor is in neutral.

BTW, when your motor is a few years old, pull the head & remove the salt buildup if used in salt water. You might be surprised how bad it looks inside even if the outside of the motor looks brand new. Also, always check for water in the oil(milky). If overworked, this motor can blow the lower main seal & let water in. It won't take long to cause serious damage.

I need more hp & will be replacing with a 9.8 Tohatsu 4-stroke. Anyone want to share positives & negatives about that engine? I could go on & on about the 5hp Honda goods & bads(it even says BADS on the motor. That should have been my clue. Thanks everyone!
