Honda 5HP

I have a Honda 5HP 4 stroke which shifts into forward and reverse very hard. I have tried lubercating but see no way to get into. Lower unit is free. Does anyone have an idea?

In all likely hood you are gettig this resistance from the shift lever itself.I have seen this but only after lengthy lay ups. Look where the shift lever goes thru the lower cowl and then connects to the shift shaft then try and get an idea of the things you will have to remove to get that shift lever out. Starter, some throttle linkage and lockouts come to mind.If that does'nt bother you then pull the shift lever and clean both lever and cowling to bare bones. Reuse the bushings, and you should be O.K..

Thanks hondan that sounds good however, my dad hass already drilled holes in the cowling and oiled this which helped. He then decided to heat the cowling which helped but melted the nylon bushings. It seems to be smooth what do think about this?

My thoughts on this are ,whats done is done. Your father has accomplished what needed to be done.How long this will help is anyones guess ,but at least if this starts to bind up again you'll know where to start.
