Honda 5HP breaks sheer pins frequently

My 2001 Honda 5HP outboard seems to break sheer pins for no apparent reason. I try to shift only at idle rpm. Using stainless steel sheer pins was suggested to me, but I don't know where to get these. What are the likely causes and solutions?

The most likely cause is that the engine idle is set to high. When you shift into gear the pins can not take the transmitted force. Or it could be the wrong pins.

I have noticed that the motor bumps or misses once or twice a minute at full throttle. There was a posting to this forum in 2002 about this problem with this engine. So I wonder if these "misses" could be putting stress on the sheer pin.

Stock shear pins for this engine are stainless and this engine idles at spec at 1500-1700 .Pretty vague and gets even vaguer when they give the in gear spec which they typically do not on the small engines.Go with the stainless and you can probably order them here.

Not to throw a red herring in here, as obviously a piece that's under water most of the time should be corrosion proof, but the fact that a shear pin is or is not stainless steel shouldn't relate to its strength - some stainless steel has lower shear strength than some regular steels.

But it is certainly stronger than most brass alternatives in this application.

Make sure the diameter of the pin is correct, and/or use the biggest one that will fit in the hole.
