I had not run my engine for 2-3 months. When I finally got it in the water it started beautifully (as usual) and idled beautifully (as usual). After at least 10 minutes at idle I powered up but could get only about 4500 RPM (5800+ is normal). It may have been my imagination but pumping the primer on the fuel hose seemed to help...a bit.

Anyway, I changed the external fuel filter (small amount of water visible at the bottom) and the internal. There is some improvement. It will get to full revs...sometimes (I hate intermittant problems). There is an occassional hesitation when revving up. Again, it starts and idles just fine.

I'm scheduled at the shop in 3 weeks (summertime blues). The guys there seem to think the problem is a plugged jet, which makes sense to me. I'm wondering if there's anything I might try in the meantime. I'm thinking about trying a fuel additive "cleaner". I know their main purpose is to flush water out of the system but since it seems that the blockage is not too severe I wonder if there's any chance it may clean the jet. Is it even advisable to use this kind of a product at all?

Aloha,
Sam

Re: Honda 50 Carburetor? Problem

First ,if you are running a permanant fuel tank, check your anti/siphon valve.A clogged main jet or lift tube will certainly produce these symptoms. If you are looking for a quick fix try removing the float bowl drain plug, then with merc power tune or omc engine tuner, fill that carb up .Let it soak a while, then fire it off. Will smoke a great deal and be hard to start ,but this can sometimes clean that carb enough to get you by the season.
