Just bought a 2003 crestliner pontoon boat with a 2003 honda 50 with 15 hours. We put it in the water a couple of days ago. It would not start.
Fuel tank full, emergency safety switch in place,
pleanty of charge on battery. Pumped bulb till hard. The engine turned over fine, but there didn't seem to be any spark. It just never tried to start. We thought we flooded the engine, so we let it set for 30 minutes. Same thing, turns over fine, but won't even try to start. The engine looks brand new inside. Looked for loose wires but nothing. The previous owner just took it in for a 15 hour check-up. Help

Already did that?

Does it have spark?

What happened when you squirted fuel into the carbs?

Sounds like the kill switch is shorted out somewhere. Trace that circuit and there's a pretty good chance you'll find something.

One more thing, did you choke it when you first tried to start it? The 40 & 50's usually fire right up when the choke is engaged. Without choking, the engine will sometimes crank and crank and crank and not start. Start it while choking, then let it sit at a fast idle for a few minutes to warm up. The idle typically doesn't smooth out until it starts to warm up (about a minute or so)

Lastly, make sure you are trying to start it in "Neutral". Its common sense but sometimes overlooked

Nav

Also check:
o Make sure gas tank vent is open.
o Check for spark with $6 spark plug tester. If no spark check the interlock (kill switch).
o Spray some starting spray in the intake. If it catches... welcome to my world. Your carbs are cheesed up. My BF50 needs a rebuild because I didn't disconnect the fuel tank.

My Owners Manual suggest to check the fuse.
As Navigator said, use the choke. But since the previous owner took it back I'm sure he will be able to start it if you just didn't use the choke.

Don't know about the 2003 model, but the 2004 has no choke, it uses an enrichment valve.
And if it's faulty it can be very difficult to impossible to start. There has been some factory mods, also.
I had problems with mine once dealer made some slight modification, it starts great.
