We have a Canadian Government Surplus 45 Honda about six years old which has
given excellent service, but this last year it has taken to smoking on
startup. This does not occur every time, and if I choke it to the point
that it rolls over a couple of times before firing, it doesn't smoke at all.
Oil consumption has not been noticeable, apart from the startup cloud. A
friend has a 90 do that and he had the powerhead replaced under warranty.

My question is this: to repair the problem, what does one do?

Valve seals are leaking or valve guides are wore.

Keep the motor tilted up beyond horizontal when not in use and this will prevent oil build up behind pistons leaking through when the motor is not running. This applies to all Hondas and there has been a bulletin released to this effect.

They are also extremely sensitive to having the oil level to full.
Try filling the level to just under the max. level.
Halfway in between is better.
