Honda 45 No top end yet???

I've got a Honda 45, I just got it back after 6 weeks from the professionals Honda guy in my area that charged me $92.30/hr. and it now has no top end.

I max out out 4200 rpm however I took it out last night and lo and behold I found if I gently pull the manual choke out when I'm in top speed it bumps up to 5500 like it should. Hurrah!

Now, what adjust do I need to make? Is this a weak choke solenoid or something else?

Pull your cover off of the engine and check to see that the carbs are open all of the way when the throttle is wide open. Last time I had my 40 in the shop for the "once over", the tech adjusted the linkage so that wide open only opened them 3/4 way. Why, I dont know, but I set them back and all was good.

Just a thought, take a look so we can rule out the obvious.

Nope,
I just checked they appear all of the way open.

Strange just a little bit of choke and they work fine.

Make them fix it???
They've had the boat for 6 weeks the first time and 3 weeks the second time. It just sits in the holding lot and they don't answer the phone, great service huh?

When I mention this they don't even blink. We have no good Honda dealers around here in Southern Maryland.

call Honda marine and talk to them
ask them what to do, they will pint u in the right direction
be calm with them because they have the power to help u
it is really hard to find good mechs because some of them were car mechs before

That was informative. A nice lady at Honda Marine said accordingly to their website there must be a problem with my:$ carb because that is why I'm not getting up to "ultra sonic" speed.:$

I have the same problem on one of my two 45's on a C-Dory. Haven't had it to a shop but I did replace the lower unit on the problem engine last season. Can't get it above 4500 rpm while the other engine will go all the way to 5700+ at WOT. I have determined that the gear ratio is the same (the replacement lower unit came from a 40 with a blown power head).

I suspect it's a clogged/fouled carb. Have not tried opening the choke however, will do the next time I get the boat in the water which may not be until the spring.

Thanks Charlie,

It could be the carbs, The shop I took it to said they rebuilt all three carbs. But who knows????

I'm no Honda guru but an engine is an engine.

Obviously, your not getting all out of every cylinder.

Choking merely adds more fuel. That leads me to believe you may have:

1. A clogged jet.

2. An air leak (behind a carb) that the extra fuel compensates for.

3. A vacuum leak. Similar to #2.

Good words of advice DWJ.

I did learn another thing, I don't like to do this for long, but when it's sitting in the driveway with a muff on, I put the controls in forward and the engine will go up to past
5000 rpm, when put in the water under stress it will not.

Just adds to the mystery.

Flounder,

Most multi cylinder engines will freely rev with no load, such as your driveway test.

You can still do some diagnostics in the driveway though.

With the engine idling, (in nuetral-be careful) spray some brake clean or carb clean around the gaskets where the carbs meet the manifold. If you have an air leak, the idle speed will change.

Visually inspect any vacuum hoses for connection and cracks.
