Hello to all. Sorry to sound stupid, but I am going visit my Dad for Thanksgiving, and he has a 2000 Honda 40 (four stroke) on the back of a pontoon. Of course, the pontoon has never been out of the water, and he is way over due for service on his motor. Unfortunately, there is not a "traveling" service tech in his area to help the old man out. Guess who has been asked to do the service?

I have always owned the trusty ole OMC V4's, and just recently I purchased a new Merc 150 Optimax. Naturally, I have never worked on a Honda before, nor have I ever been under the cowl of one either. Here are my questions before I go and do the job next month:

1. What Oil Filter do I purchase for the Motor?
2. What weight and type oil do I choose?
3. Does the engine have a drain plug or do I suck it out with something?
4. How much Oil will I need?
5. Spark Plugs: What type and what gap setting?
6. Lower Unit: What do the drain plugs look like? Will I need a special allen wrench or screw driver to loosen and tighten?
7. What type of Lower Unit Oil will I need?

I have always worked on my own motors, so I will assume I will be able to do this simple stuff myself. Unfortunately, he lives 1100 miles away in the middle of the sticks, so I need to bring the right materials with me.

Thanks.

Re: Honda 40

oil filter part #= 15400-PFB-007...10W-30 is fine=2.54 quarts oil...gear lube=90 weight=17.6 fluid ounces...spark plugs in a 4 stroke will go 3-400 hours unless you do LOTS of idling or trolling(plug=NGK brand DR7EA)...has drain plug for crankcase but is easiest to suck it out(and less messy)oil drain plug=12mm...gear oil drain=slotted screw

ZZZZZZZ, thanks for the info. Just one other question: What do I use to remove the oil from the crankcase? Most likely, the boat will be on a lift, so I cannot take the chance of spilling oil into the water with a sloppy job.
Thanks.
