What is the difference between a Honda 40hp and a 50hp?
Can a 40hp be made into a 50hp by changing something myself? Thanks for any info.

Cylinder head, specifically the intake valves and intake valve seats, camshaft, carb main jets, ignition control unit and engine decal.

Now how much money would this upgrade cost I wonder. Would the reliability be affected by doing this ? I believe the displacement is the same so I dont think it would. I have the same motor and I'm getting 29MPH What would you expect to hit with ten more hp? Maybe 35? Don't mean to hyjack just very curious about this. I'll call the shop and see what I come up with.

Probably closer to 3 mph.You may want to fine tune your setup especially vertical height. If you can gain an inch and still maintain sound mount and pump water you could gain 2 to 3 mph.Once you have your setup post your figures (boat,hp,prop, max speed and rpm, typical load and activity.in the prop forum and they may be able to help you get a little more speed.

It is very inexpensive for the factory to pick "head B" (50 HP) instead of "head A" (40 HP) when building an engine but it is very expensive for you to buy "Head B". Now the question really is, what actually does change between the two. The only way you will know is to compare both engine parts lists item by item and then find the cost of each part. Just because the displacement is the same does not mean the entire engine is the same and they generally are not. These conversions are rarely economical except on some smaller engines where a restrictor plate is used to essentially de-tune a larger engine to make a smaller one, or a bigger carb to make more power from a smaller engine.
