Honda 40 - Do I really have to buy a $500 assembly to fix a $3 trim cylinder seal?

Honda 40 (BF40a)

I have a slow leak where the piston goes up and down from the power trim assembly.

I called the Honda dealer they explained that the whole trim piston/rod assembly will have to be replaced because that internal seal can't be accessed and replaced separately. What?????

Of course, I'd rather not replace a $500+ part to essentially get a new o-ring. I have replaced these on other outboards with only using new o-rings.

I was hoping that I would only have to replace the seals and maybe top caps.

Has anyone had this issue or any advice?

Thanks in advance!

reading between the lines:
Honda buys the complete package and does not have an individual parts break down.

take it to a hydraulic repair facility where they can dis-assemble repair, and test.

You are right on,this is T&T leak down, We have a force 125, I know im in the wrong forum, I got bored, and to fix a T&T leak down is two rubber washers on a 125 force,

Tear it apart, and replace the rubber washers and seals. You have all the time in the world, Baby its still cold outside!

Those parts have been discontinued and no longer available from Honda. The last price on it was about $375 when they were available and they never did sell that seal seperately. The same manufacture makes the trim and tilt units for the larger Honda, Yamaha, and Evinrude. I dont know if this is the same case for the smaller ones. You will need to take it apart and see if you can match something up.

I have successfully sealed slow leaks using a product called TransX available at your local auto parts store. As far as that type product goes its a little expensive but no where near $500 bucks. No guarantees but its certainly worth a try.
