Honda 200hp WOT at Tach......but no speed

I cleared the harbor channel last weekend and applied the throttle.

My speed hardly picked up......I then looked at my GPS .....was going 8.5mph and my engine Tach was showing almost 6k!

This condition lasted maybe 4-5 minutes.........I had no engine alerts, the engine
did not sound like it was missing.

No matter what I did my engine Tach was up there 5-6k and I was not going over 8 mph.

But after about 4-5 minutes of this.........the boat started picking up speed
and the Tach was back to normal???? Normal here would be 20mph and
a little over 3k on the Tack.

This is a 200hp Honda on a 22ft Aluminum boat.

Does it sound like I have some bad fuel...maybe water in the fuel? The boat has been seeing regular use with no problems.....
I run premium fuel and ring free additive also.

If it is running fine now i would think you were fouled with a big piece of something floating like seaweed , kelp or a plastic bag

I havd had to reverse many times to clear stuff of my drive

You did'nt mention how old this unit is.My first reponse would be ,how old are the batteries and what do those terminal ends look like? These things are EFI engines and rely on reference voltage back to the sensors to operate properly. This voltage is very low and can be easily disturbed by dirty terminal ends or a weak battery.Your alternator feeds signal to the ecm that in turn regulates the tach reading.

This is a 2004 Honda 200hp with about 330 hours.

The Annual Maint on the engine was done about 3 months ago and I have two
fresh (3 month old) AMG Lifeline Batteries, group 24's.

I did not think about the prop being tangled.........that might be a possiblity....
it had to be something that provided a temporary interruption.

I going to add some fuel stabilizer also and a fresh fill up.

Thanks

Re: Honda 200hp WOT at Tach......but no speed

I am still getting this problem......I'm hitting 9mph at 4000-4500rpm.....no
power.

Last weekend I put a charger on my batteries and my boat ran like a champ....was crusin 32mph back from Catalina Island!

This weekend without charging the batteries.....my boat was a slug again.
I did not go over 11mph no mater how high my rpm's are...

I have discounted the fact that I am accumulating water below deck....
I have sealed deck with NO bilge pump below deck! But I am now draining
this water before every trip(drain plugs on transom).

So Hondon gets my vote........It now sounds like I'm not getting juice....

This is more likey the case too because I've have also lost my fishfinder now(DSM connection lost....and or no data on screen).
Have the Raymarine C120 with the DSM300.......the DSM300 is notorously
sensitive to power loss.

Questions.
1. I bought a Battery Tender Jr.......and do one battery at a time.
This charger has stages and floats.....tell me it is OK for use with my
Lifeline AGM batteries.....it sounds like its ok from my readings..??
2. My Volt reader on the engine control panel reads 13........that is too low
correct....it use to read almost 14? Does this sound like I have an alternator issue?
3. What are the best tests to eliminate problems with different parts of
my electrical system??
A. Check the Batteries with voltmeter.....should be 12.6?
B. How do I check alternator output is good? Dummy style......
C. How best to isolate any connection problems or disruptions?

It realy sounds like you have a spun hub in your prop, try your spare and see if that helps.

You can check the spun prop theory by marking/scribing acroos the prop amd the hub to see if the line moves. That would be my first priority at this point.
