I am in the process of purchasing a new boat that was suppose to have a 4 stroke Honda 200 hp but the dealer has notified me that they are on backorder and it may be a while before more come in. He is offering to put a 4 stroke Yamaha 200 hp on it as an alternative to get me out on the water sooner. He says it is a more expensive motor but is it better??

Does anyone have an opnion on these 2 motors? I have heard that the Honda is quiet as a mouse but have not heard much more about either motor in this HP range..

Any insight from those with experience is appreciated. I dont want to make the wrong decision just to get out sooner......

Welcome!!

You have a golden opportunity to do yourself a giant favor. Since you obviously like the boat and have a choice for power, look into an E Tec.

Re: Honda 200 vs Yamaha 200

Welcome Sdau,

I can tell you the Honda's are very very quiet. We got boarded by the coast guard last year in Galveston one day. Seem's we were to close to the USS Cole for the Navys taste. Thats a whole nother story.

The CG's little run about had twin honda's running and I noticed the tell tale water stream. Asked the young guy in charge if they were actually running and he said Oh Yeah! Quietest things I've ever heard. He called em gutless pigs though! Said he would be willing to swap for our Johnson 115 Ocean Runner any day. Yes, it's anectdotal but these guys are out all the time with them and have there own boats as well. Said they would not buy one no matter what. Your requirements may be just fine though when compared to open water and choppy bay's.

Re: Honda 200 vs Yamaha 200

hello
so far there have really been no running issues with the F200. were some updates to the throttle links and some to the regulator rectifier in early years but no running issues
both are fine engines but require maint, as do the Etec. always remember the sales pitch on the service schedule of the E-tec is based on a 50 hour per year average. so your 3 year schedule may actually be different than advertised. its in print so tiny only a lawyer with a magnifying glass caan find it but its there. never mentioned on the infomercial.
makes me suspect the infomercial. but so far the smaller e-tecs I see work well.
