I inherited a late 80's model Honda 2.2 4 stroke outboard about three years ago. I had the local Honda dealer tune it up and replace the carbuerator and it ran great all summer. Unfortunately it was in storage for the next two years without having the gas drained from it. Upon trying to start it recently, it would run for up to 5 seconds if I put gasoline directly into the air intake, but that's it. The spark is gapped to 0.022 and it's firing. I dismantled the carb and it looks good. It simply behaves as if it is unable to pull the air/gas mixture from the carb into the cylinder. There is only one needle valve that I can see and it looks clean. The carb float looks good and does not appear to be hanging up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, Steve.

Looking good is not good enough in a carb, particularly a tiny carb. Take it apart again and push wire or high pressure air through every tiny pinhole orifice, including the inlet to the float bowl.

:)

That carb has a main jet along with an emulsion tube. They both need to be clean in order for it to run properly. The main jet can be unscrewed and in there beyond that is a tube(emusion) that protrudes up into the venturi with holes around it's perimiter that starts the fuel to emusify with air. It is held in place by the main jet and can be dislodged by prying down from the venturi area after the jet has been removed. Althoug not exactly specific to your motor this may be of some help.

http://www.dgweb.com/~bobaloo/Carbclean/CarbClean.htm
