Is the spacer just in the cover or does the shaft and water tube have spacers that can be removed to shorten to a 20” shaft length. I have the same motor and before taking the spacer off I’m asking on here. Don’t want to take it apart only to find it’s just a housing spacer and nothing under it is sectional to remove? I can’t figure out why a housing spacer is needed if nothing can be shortened inside of it? Hope I made my question clear. Just don’t want extra work for nothing if things in the spacer aren’t removable either.

A 28in motor would be a tough sell here, no matter the season, but really tough headed into winter.

I think I'd be looking for blown power head motors to rob all the parts you can to make this change. Maybe get lucky and find a short shaft model.

Removing the 6in +/- spacer still leaves you a huge 7in difference between your 15in transom and the hope to be modified to a 22in motor....

Thats not likely to run well, no matter how you set it up. Several topics deal w 15in transoms and 20in motors. None I can recall worked very well w out tons of water spray everywhere w less then favorable performance. Jack plates, setback plates and modified raised transoms have all been tried....

The mid section would need to be replaced to get a 20in motor, and even then your still stuck w a short transom and a long motor.....

Good luck in your quest
I’m in the same situation with sailboat length. Can the spacer be removed to reduce shaft length to 20” meaning is the shaft and water tube sectional under the spacer also?

I do not believe the shafts use spacers.-----And parts availability might be an issue.----And this is a lot of work.---Sell it or trade for the motor you need.
