I'm in the market for a Honda 15 hp outboard for a jon boat. What are the big differences between the older "Squareish" (2001-2002) and the new "Sleek" (2004) models?

I can get 2001 fishing camp motor for about $1400 or buy a brand new one for $2300 from a local dealer.

Does anyone have experience with these (15hp) outboards?

The boat is rated for 15hp and will be used mostly in salt water at slow (No Wake) speeds.

Thanks for your time.
Regards,
John Jolley
:)

Re: Honda 15hp "New or Used"

Are there any Honda experts that can shed some light on the differences, strengths or weaknesses of the "Older version(s)" of portable Honda outboards and the "New" version? I'm interested in a 9.9 or 15 hp model.

I'd appreciate your opinions.

Thanks in advance.
John Jolley

This is the rrepair and Troubles Forum.

Probably work better if we move it to General Outboard (non-repair).

phatmanmike, is it the same block as the 18 hp? I remember some time back one fellow saying that these engines shook quite a bit when trolling...Is this your experience?

You can't compare old "Squareish" (on the market more than 10 years) and new Honda BF15. There are a lot of differences. I have 2003 BF20 (the same engine as BF15) and I am very satisfied. No smoke, no noice, lightweight (BF20 is the lightest outboard on the market including 2strokes), easy to start (special system developed by Honda), no vibration, ultra low fuel consumption...I've also red test in the greatest European motor boat magazine (german Boote magazine), where you can find that the best choice among all other OB in this class is Honda.
If you know german language, you can read full test on the followign address:
http://www.boote-magazin.de/bto/boote_artikel/show.php3?id=534&nodeid=11&nodeid=11&artikel=long
