Last week a mechanic replaced an alternator and voltage regulator on this 2000 Honda 150hp 4 stroke outboard. This was replaced because the engine wouldn't start and the old alternator was putting out to much voltage. Well, after the parts were changed we still had the same problem, 17 volts. I should mention that the batteries were being fried. So another mechanic that is Honda certified came over and said that a fuse was bad and changed it. He was here all of 15 minutes and gone. The engine ran fine for about one hour total. The engine now turns over but wont start. Im starting to wonder whats going on here $750.00 later. My questions would be as follows.
Since the above was written another mechanic says that it is a bad starter.
Does the alternator and regulator change make sense?
Is there a "fuse" that regulates voltage?
Is it true that this engine has two alarms only, temp and oil pressure?
