Just bought a 15 ft. aluminum Sylvan Yukon w/Honda 15 motor almost brand new. Compression is 130/133 and runs perfect. Boat weighs about 780 Lbs loaded. I do have the hydrofoil jr. installed. What can I look for on fuel consumption ? I'm thinking a 3 gal tank is fine, with 2 gal bkup can in the boat at all times. My brother says 6 gal. minimum, but he runs a 40 Merc 2 stroke on almost the same boat.

prginocx,

Without knowing exactly the type of boating you will do, you should be averaging around a gallon (plus or minus) an hour at full throttle. Back off 25% to a good cruising speed and you may cut that to 3/4 gallon per hour. Wind direction and current will also come into play...

Your Brothers Merc 2 stroke drinks gas at a rate of about 3.5 -4 gallons per hour wide open and probably an even 3 at optimum cruising speed. He does need the 6 galloon tank :D

With 5 gallons on board, 3 in the tank, with 2 in reserve, you can pretty much plan on running all day without ever needing to look at fuel.

You got a great little engine there...enjoy it!

Nav

I love this engine already and I've only had it in the water one time. The previous owner didn't have the hydrafoil and complained about the boat not staying trim. He kept extra battery in the bow to offset the tilt.
My use will be primarily trolling for trout and bass fishing. Some running WOT from hole to hole, but only long term trolling. My neighbor took one look at the setup and echoed you, "6 gals is overkill, 3 in tank and 2 in reserve is more than adequate"...

I have a similar outfit - Aluma Craft 14.5 and Honda 15 Four stroke. I use it a lot on Lake Superior trolling for Salmon and Lakers. I can get almost a full day of trolling and running with the 3 gallon tank. I purchased another Honda 3 gallon tank and just switch tanks rather than pouring from the reserve can - no fuss, no muss. I rarely get into the second can on any given day. You'll love this motor....

Alumicraft 14.5 on Lake Superior ? And when it gets windy you just call Scotty and have him beam you up ?

You know a second 3 gal tank would be pretty cheap, that is a good idea...

Why fuss with two tanks. Put one six gallon in it and spend half the time refueling. Gives you more room and less clutter.

I would go with a 6 gallon, why waste the space with 2 different tanks on board, your going to be carrying 5 gallons total with 2 tanks, just get a 6 gallon, that doesnt mean you have to keep it filled up, it does mean that you wont have to switch tanks over or be bothered, one fill up.
