I am looking at a used Honda 130TL. It is for fresh water use. I have saw some of the post dealing with recalls and problems with 130's on this forum. Most related to saltwater. I will be buying the motor as is, with a verified compression check. I am now concerned about the motor's reliability. Is my concern valid?

Welcome to iboats and maybe.

They had a couple of problems and I'm not sure if yours would be affected. They were having problems with certain blocks developing cracks in the exhaust area. The cylinder heads were having similar problems. Both problems were fixed with new castings and a lower thermostat. The affected heads aren't always attached to the affected blocks. You could have one, the other, or both. There are ways to check and you should take it to a Honda dealer to confirm whether or not those are affected components. I believe warranty might still cover the repair, but that's not my call by any means. A compression check would be a good idea, but won't detect these problems. The head problem can be detected with a leakdown test. The block problem needs physical inspection. The affected units are within a given serial number range, but I replaced one head that wasn't on the list. It must've been a leftover during production and got onto a unit when there were no more heads immediately available.

Any significant amount of research will tell you that Honda and Yamaha are, as a general rule, superior engines to the old American counterparts. I know this will offend some, but...
