Hey Everyone,

I am considering a boat with a 2003 BF 130. My service guy just told me some interesting stuff:

1) they don't make them anymore

2) almost all of the 130's have a problem with cracks in the exhaust chamber, leading to moisture in the oil, which can kill the powerhead over time.

Can anyone comment on this information? Why did they stop making it? More worried about the moisture issue.

I really appreciate it.

You need to take his information seriously and do not buy this motor since they have since upgraded them to a 135 hp. If you want to deal with the problem, then buy the motor, but I would not recommend it.

Hey Joe-the issue is only with the following serial number ranges : BZBE1201322 thru BZBE1599999 and BZBH1200181 thru BZBH1599999....in the 100 plus we've had through our shop I've only seen that issue ONE time plus Honda has extended the warranty on those units to 10 YEARS past original purchase date...the one we did have an issue with they GAVE him a brand new motor !! They stopped making them to introduce their new 135 with the VTEC technology

The first 3 yrs of BF115/130 production had possible cracked blocks. Have your dealer refer to service bulletin #27. Honda fixed the block issue, but some heads cracked (service bulletin #54). Honda has extended the warranty to 10 years from the original date of purchase, regardless of how many owners. There are two other service bulletins on this model, #25 replacement of vapor seperator & #48 main relay. Both are updates & all the dealer needs to do is call Honda and ask for consideration.
The BF135 does not have VTEC technology, the BF150 does.
I would not hesitate to buy the motor if it checks out 100%. Is the price right and do you like the boat/motor package?

Hey guys, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I did research the problem here and found some interesting information. I was going to pull the trigger on an arima with a 130 that had about 1000 hours on it. In all honesty, at the end of the day, the fact that Honda no longer makes the engine, combined with the block and head issues, made me walk away from the deal. It was a nice package, well maintained and a good price, but I currently have an 18cc with a just broken in suzuki 115 4 stroke (cracked my 2stroke lower unit last year, found a leftover suzuki at a good price). The way that new suzuki runs, as efficient as it is, I won't give it up unless I find a similar quality motor that performs as well as it does.

Thanks again.

You an excellent boat and motor at present, why would you want to change? I have a friend a 18-19 Bayliner w/130 Honda, he has had good luck with it but he really stern heavy and I would think the Arima would also sit low in the stern unless you are looking at the 19-21 ft models. I think the new Suzuki and Honda are very comparable. I juat put a new 225 Honda on my boat and I love it. But, then again I went from a 200 hp Merc 2 stroke to the Honda, no comparison.

yeah, it was the 19 arima -- really different setup and ride from what I have now. I agree with you, my current boat with that new suzuki is fine, but I'd like something a bit bigger to take the family out -- with the arima, you get a small cabin.
