I've already tried the engine FAQ's
A buddy has a 4 stroke Honda 130 EFI (2000) that has always run flawless. Well today he wen't to start it and it coughed once and then hasn't started since. It just cranks over with spark but won't catch. We checked the fuel filter and u can blow thru it so I'm thinking possibly bad fuel pump. ANyone have any ideas on diagnosing this EFI problem.
Thanx
Jason

Re: Honda 130 EFI won't start

Can you hear the high pressure fuel pump come on when you turn on at the key switch? If not, then it could be the main engine relay and or the engines computer. This was issue with my motor, first the main relay fails but still allows the motor to run until it fries the CPU which can't handle the extra electircal load. You can also jump power to the fuel pump and get the pump running then try to start the motor again. If motor runs then you could have issue with main relay/cpu. If the engine does not start you have other issues. Also do the engine light flash a sequence when the key is turned on?

Re: Honda 130 EFI won't start

I'm not a tech, but own a 2002. Is the kill switch lanyard attached? Is this the first attempt to start since last fall? Is there a fuel water separator installed? If so, does it have water in the bowl? As mentioned above, does the high-pressure fuel pump run when the key is turned into the 'on' position? Is the starter turning rapidly or could it be that the battery is almost dead or the sarter burned-up and cranking slowley? There have been problems with the Honda key switches sticking in the start position and burning up starters (happened ot me). Bad fuel? Antisiphon value at the tank stuck closed? Is the VST needle stuck closed? Do you have ethanol in your fuel and has it been sitting in the fuel system all winter?

Re: Honda 130 EFI won't start

Thanx for the replies so far.
Here goes the answers to your questions.
The motor ran fine the week before.
The motor turns over normally with spark just doesnt fire.
The fuel pump seems to be making noise but I'll have to check it when I go over.
The motor uses the boats tanks.
The fuel filter on the motor appears clean and u can blow thru it.
The console doesnt flash any lights.
The safety lanyard is in but maybe it faulty.
So I'm thinking dead ECM, faulty safety cutout or neautral safety switch in the console.
I'm going over friday to work on it.

Re: Honda 130 EFI won't start

Zerex - Honda currently has a "Product Update" out for the BF130 touting an improved main relay. Seems the old style main relay was sealed with potting material that over time separated from the relay housing, allowing the electrical components inside to corrode. "As a result of the corrosion, the outboard may not start." Contact your nearest Honda authorized servicing dealer for free replacement of the relay. Seems to fit the symptoms you have and the work is free so you have nothing to lose by calling your dealer. Good luck.

They also updated the whole fuel system in 2002/2003. If there is a clear plastic bowl (under-cowl fuel/water separator) forward the VST, then you have the updated system. If you have a big black egg-shaped high pressure fuel filter post VST inline to the fuel rail, then you have the old system.

This motor does everything but start the fuel is good because the kicker comes off the same tank and runs perfect it seems as though the injectors aren't sprayiying fuel. Maybe not enough pressure in the fuel rail.

my motor is finally fixed turns out the fuel system was a recall. but that wasn't the problem. it was the wiring harness. there was some corrosion in it so the motor wouldn't fire.
