Great forum with lots of information! Thanks.

I took my Honda in for a regular oil change after it had been in storage for the winter. I never start it before I do this so I didn't see the gauges beforehand.

When I put it in the water (it's on a Voyager 24' tri-toon), the tachometer and speedometer didn't work.

I checked for connectors loose, fuses blown and loose wires and didn't find any.

I thought the small tube that sticks out on the lower unit was the speedometer tube (someone told me that). It has a tyrap around the hard plastic connector that sticks out the end to tie it to the engine. That's the way it has always been.

I'd just like the gauges to work. Anyone have a suggestion or two? Thanks!

I'm guessing that at least the tach worked previously and you are not so sure about the speedo. As for the tach, try giving it a couple little smacks with the back of your hand while running. The needles sometimes get stuck and need a little wake up call.Cheesy I know but,hey it works more than you know.

I've tried the tapping stuff, but also I can see the tach move from a few marks down to zero when I start the engine.

I'm sure that everything worked before I stored it for winter. I just didn't see how changing the oil and etc. would affect the tach and speedometer.

It should'nt.As far as the speedo goes it is a displacement guage that uses water pressrure to move a diaphram in the guage and somewhere on that transom or engine you have a pickup. You have one built into the engine but they are not always used.Any way it is essentially a hole that allows water to displace air as you are underway.Bugs love that hole as do'es any piece of semi submerged piece of wood.Chances are the pickup is blocked.Tach is another story. Most failures are the tach itself or faulty wireing to it.

Thanks for your advice. I've decided to get it into my driveway and work on it before I take it to someone to look at it. I'll have someone nearby to tackle me if I start looking at the engine with a wrench in my hand, though. <GRIN>
