I just bought a used honda 100(10 hp)it's blue and white.I think it is a mid 80's model. Now here's my problem, It starts fine and runs for about 3 minutes then stalls and won't restart. If I leave it for a couple of hours it starts fine again and dies after a couple of minutes again. At first I thought it must be a fuel problem, I went through the fuel system and everything looks great. So i checked the electrical, When the motor is cold I have lots of spark but after running for a couple of minutes and the motor quits then there is no spark at all.(i can even hold the spark plug in my hand and pull it over, nothing)I am leaning towards a bad CDI but would appeciate any suggestions so that i don't waste money on parts i don't need Thanks -Gary

Next time out ,try running this unit with the motor cover off and see what happens.Ignition failures on these engines are rare but exhaust leaks are common and will give you the symptoms you are confronting.Try this quick test and then we'll go from there.

Re: honda 100

Hondon, The cover was off the last two tests. They were done in my shop using a barrel of water to cool the motor. When the motor is cold there is lots of spark present when grounding the plugs to the motor. I made the mistake of getting my hand to close and got a good shock, after it runs for a couple of minutes and it stalls there is no spark at all, i can hold the sparkplug in one hand and the motor in the other hand and get someone to pull the motor over and get no spark at all.I read some of the other posts and now suspect the stator but I'm not sure.I am open to any advice or sugestions anybody can share thanks -Gary
