I have a 1999 BF 40 on my pontoon and it has run fine all summer until recently. It starts ok and runs ok until about 20-30 minutes. It then starts to miss. I replaced the plugs put some gas dryer in. Does ok for a while then starts again. It sputters as you add power but finally clears, runs for a while then sputters. Today it finally quit on me about 10 times.

Any simple suggestions I might try before I have to pull the boat and haul it 60 miles to a dealer.

Thanks.

Take a fuel sample out of your tank and let us know if there is any water in it.It sounds like you are not running with a water separator.Poor choice.

It has the OEM fuel filter inside the hood. I have emptied it but have not changed it in three seasons. I don't think the OEM filter is a water separator. Changing the filter and draining the carb bowls might be worth a try before pulling it and taking to a dealer.

Does anyone know if the fuel filter can be cross referenced to a motorcycle one or something else? My closest Honda dealer is 60 miles away.

That filter under the cover offers you some water separation but it is not real big so protection is limmited. How's that operating temperature?

Temp is fine I assume because I do not get an over temp warning. The side "pisser" shows water flow. If the thermostat fails is it like an automotive one and fails open?

I have a different fuel tank and will clean the entire fuel system this weekend and try again.

Re: Hond 40 Problem

Problem solved - fuel contamination. When I removed the fuel filter all kinds of crud came out of the inlet side. While the hose was disconnecte I used the primer bulb to pump some gas out of the tank into a glass jar. It was half crud and water and half gas. The tank is a 13 gal plastic with a screw type vent which I leave open most of the time. So I either got water in thru the open vent or got some crap gas. Any way, system cleaned out and it runs fine.
