Homosassa Springs for the day - Thoughts?

I am going to Homosassa River for the day. I have a Glastron MX 175, it's a 17' run-about. It will be my first time boating outside of Orlando lakes and am a little nervous to get out on a river as i've only had a boat for 3 months. But it is due time, I'm tired of going in circles. Does anyone know of a good ramp to use or have any other good info on Homosassa?

Let Google be your friend. There is a lot of fun over there and a few of waterside restaurants from what I remember, but I just heard that the Magarita Bar & Grill burned last week. Nothing to be nervous about. Just move slowly near the banks in any unfamiliar water. Also look into Steinahatchee (sp?) springs, and even as far as Destin for great boating. Head east a bit to the St. Johns RIver. You can run that from Lake Monroe all the way to the Easternmost point of Jacksonville at the Atlantic Ocean.

Homosassa is not one of my favorites. What do you want to do when you get there? Do you fish, ride, swim? If I were you I'd drive a tad bit further north and go to Crystal River. Better swimming, easy ride to gulf if you want to sight-see, a couple islands to stop at along the way, decent bars/restaurants to stop at for a beer or eats.
If you want to explore I can help. I grew up fishing in Central Fl but don't anymore. So for the last 10-12 years I have looked for and try'd to find every swimming hole, sand bar, bar/restaurant etc......

My advice might be too late, I dunno when you are going. I just spent a couple days there this week scalloping. I stayed at MacRaes because it was md week. IMO pay the ten bucks and launch across the river at Riverhaven Marina. MacRaes ramp is free but a total zoo on weekends during scallop season. I dunno if you have GPS or not (doubt you do since you boat on lakes) but the river is very unforgiving......very very unforgiving. Outside the channel is limestone and eats props and lower units. It is well marked though (but zig-zags) and if you are there on the weekend there will plenty of other boats to follow but use your head. Margrettaville grill did recently have a fire and is gone, there are other dining choices but not as good as MG.

We are out most weekends as well. Currently in Daytona for the summer, but should be back around the end of Sept/mid-Oct. Boat pic is in the avatar and the name is below. Look for us and stop and say Hi. We usually raft up with others at the 110-111 marker (on the back side, in the idle zone).

don't know if you already went as your posts didn't have dates, watch out for the rocks, drunk rednecks, and abandon crab traps, they are everywhere

for those of you who enjoyed MG, you should get out more, nothing like frozen sea food , under cooked american fries and crappy service, except for the place being patriotic and cause it was the only place to go......Crystal River offers so much more

Crystal River for sure. The ride out gulf side is pretty as well. Enjoy!
