Re: Homemade Minimax

Pretty cool, looks like it was hauling it.

Don't know that I would want to smach through any big wakes with it but that looks like a fun ride.

Maybe try a fin on the bottom to get rid of the squirley top end, shouldn't take much.

Nice boat, good job.

move tilt pin away from the transom one hole at a time. you don't want to bury the nose.

i had one of those back in the early 70's with a 15 rude on it. has to start, jump in and go, or the transom would go under. you had to beach it to stop.

Re: Homemade Minimax

When the Minimax plans first appeared in Popular Mechanics magazine (1960?), several of my high school buds built them. As you might expect, a horsepower race developed. It maxed out with JohnnyRude 18's and Mercury Mark 25's which were scarey fast. I have a vivid memory of one friend hitting a wake and flipping. He was okay and we saved the motor. My effort used a Mercury KD-4S with go-kart, tuned exhaust headers and a two-blade, bronze racing prop. Great fun when the air and water are warm. I'm thinking about building another one for my grandchilren. Have fun, be safe!

Agree with Tash! that boat is riding too tight on the water. Tilt the engine out to get the nose up some and you will pick up more speed.

LOSE some weight! LOL You are a big guy for a boat that size.

That looks like a Chrysler 9.9. If so, go over to The Chrysler Crew, Chrysler marine website. Dave and Franz will surely be interested.

Boy did that bring back memories. My dad build one back inthe 60's. Originally we had a 5 hp Evinrude on it. (4cyl, spark lever) Then my brother bought a Hurricane 10 (Keiheifer-mercury) It really flew. Dad built a steering wheel housing, got an auto steering wheel from a junk jard, mounted a steel bar on the engine with pulleys so we had a primative cable steering system.

Those were some fun days.

Nice Minimax! Looks like tons of fun. Is there a horse power limit on that lake?
