just came up with these yesterday and installed them, worked great,
i went to the local hardware and bought 2-3ft sections of galvanized pipe, threaded on each end,
2-elbows,1 male end, 1 female end, 2 end caps and 2 of the round sockets for gas pipe, these are round with 4 holes in and a female end that you normally use to screw into a ceiling joist or a wall then screw the pipe in to.
i used 2 of the holes in the round socket and a flat bar and mounted to the side of the trailer, with 2 bolts, 1 above and 1 below the square channel, placed the flat bar over the bolts with a couple of lock washers then tightened up,
next i installed the elbow into the round socket(make sure you get this as tight as possible the first time)then screw in the 3ft section of pipe,
i bought a section of pvc pipe that fits perfectly over the pipe but still spins, cut that to length and slid over the pipe and installed the end cap.
pvc acts as a roller and should not harm the boat and instead of paying 65 to 75 for guide ons, the whole mess only cost me about 15.00

i will try to post pics if i can get the wofes digital camera

Sounds like a Good Plan...........

next i installed the elbow into the round socket(make sure you get this as tight as possible the first time)
I'd Drill,+ Cross-Pin this connection........
It Will Loosen, If you Don't............

I did Something Like this with Aluminum Conduit..........

Howdy craneman. What size boat is this for? I'm in desperate need of rebuilding my trailer, and I like what you've described. Mayhaps what you've done will work for me. Thanx, Mike

To Bondo: How did the aluminum conduit work out? I was thinking of using conduit so that I could use a bender and set the angle I want.

Works Great.........

Only Problem has been, If I catch a line on it, It'll Snap-off...........
I'm going to redesign,+ add a Spring Factor....
Just haven't decided How yet..... ;)

Re: Homemade Guide ons

I did basically the same thing as bondo with the conduit. The only difference is I welded a large valve spring to the elbow where the guide on post rises up the side of the boat. Then welded the guide on post to the valve spring. The valve spring is heavy enough so the guide doesn't bend when the trailer hits it during loading of the boat. But does have enough give to keep the the guide post from snapping off if I catch a line or do something stupid :)
