Homemade 470 alternator bracket?

Intermittent charging issues last season with the 470; figure I might as well upgrade to an alternator system before it becomes a "must do" item mid-season (btw, that's 25 years on the original "unreliable" stator system, for those keeping track at home). The fall back is the breezeworks setup, but seems like I should be able to buy and alternator and have someone fab a few brackets for well under $300. Has anyone done this? If so, do you have a template/measurements? Lastly, not sure where the "low mount" setup goes--do I want this, or do I want "high mount"? No P/S on my rig...

I made my own low-mount bracket setup ( I have power steering). You could probably duplicate it or something similar for about $20 in nuts, bolts, threaded rod, and some steel stock, all out of Home Depot. The alternator was an eBay, $60 marine-rated 10si. When I get home, I'll snap a few pictures and take a few measurements.

I bought my set up on e-bay for $270.00 last year. I absolutely love it. Gotta love them 1 wire hundred amp alternators.

The PO of mine did the high mount with a long bolt and a bunch of nuts as a spacer and used a standard automotive arm and alternator. It works great and costs about $50 for the rebuilt GM alternator. I can post some pictures this weekend if you need them.

yeah, that would be great, thanks. I think I'm also going to try the auto regulator idea mentioned here; going to swing by the junk yard and see if I can pick one up and test...

Here are some pictures of my homemade 'low mount' setup. It relies on the power steering pump for adjustment of the belt tension. There are two 7/16 holes under the water pump housing that in some 470's is used to secure the bracket for the coolant overflow tank. I moved the overflow tank to the transom, and put threaded rod into these holes. The supports are 1/4 inch thick, 1.0 inch wide steel straight out of Home Depot. I used rod joiners between the lower supports to stiffen the threaded rod.

The upper support beam is the same 1/4 x 1 inch steel as the lower support, attached with 5/16 threaded rod into the water pump housing. The curved bracket on the top of the alternator is off a Chevy S-10, it gave the perfect spacing between the upper beam and the alternator, in order to line up the pulleys.

Since everything was threaded into aluminum I was a bit conservative with the torque wrench and used lockwashers wherever I could. It looks a bit cheesy, but whole assembly is very solid and doesnt vibrate at all. Once everythig was cut to size and fitted, I cleaned the individual parts with acetone and sprayed it with rustoleum black.

There's no reason you cannot do it. just ENSURE that you're using an SAE J1171 compliant marine alternator.

So what ever happened? Did you put in a regulator or did you make brackets? I need to figure out how to put an alternator on my 470 by Monday so I'm a bit curious what you ended up doing....

This thread is two years old. You will get better results if you start a new one stating your question. Just sayin'.

Hey! This is my thread! Got lazy and went with the breezeworks set up. Took about an hour to install, has worked great since.
