Big bear! Our state record is 879 lb taken in 2010 by a guy using a crossbow!

Thats a pretty good sized bear for a black bear.
Question: do you have to have 'tags' (permit) for hunting/killing a bear other than self defence? or?
Around these parts you wouldn't get away with killing it without a pretty hefty fine and probable loss of your rifle, etc.
Again, if it was directly threatening you and your family, etc...than it is not a problem or if you have the correct hunting tag/permit. That said, bear tags are a lot harder to come by these days.

That's quite a black bear. I have seen a few while deer hunting, but none bigger than me. In NY, the state big game license include deer and bear tags. I have never taken a shot at the ones I have seen. I actually just try to scare them off so I can go back to sleep while posted up deer hunting!!!! I imagine if I see one that size I might try to harvest one. It's been three decades since I last tasted bear meat. Don't recall if I enjoyed it or not.
My big game license arrived in the mail yesterday and ironically I remarked to the mrs. that I won't be needing the bear tag.

or maybe HOLY SOW!

Bear tags come with the big game license and they are getting quite prolific here in VT.
