Re: Holsclaw Trailer
As I said, I know very little about boats and trailers, but I am an accomplished home auto mechanic. The winch is rusty but it works. The pawls hold in both directions, although operating the pawls is a little tough.
The front support foot is less rusty, but does have some rust. It moves the tongue up and down easily. The support has a small metal wheel for moving the trailer around without a car. That wheel worked when we pulled the trailer out to the end of the driveway, but the in edge is rusted out. I would probably replace it if I were keeping the trailer.
As far as I can tell the rollers and the bow cushion are in reasonable, but not like-new, condition. However, I have not looked closely at them. It's too dark to look now; I might look tomorrow.

There is a relatively recent VT plate on the trailer, so it must have been registered at some point. We can produce a bill of sale stating that the trailer is ours to sell. The deal there is that the previous owner had until May 1 to clean up the yard. We have not seen him or heard from him since he cleaned out the house in January. There is language in the sales agreement that our lawyer assures us is iron clad giving us ownership of anything that remains after May 1.

I looked at the name plate to get the model number, capacity and manufacturer. There were some other numbers there, but I did not see a year. Can you give me any other way to judge the year?

The tires look to be in good shape. They rolled fine when we pulled it down the driveway and it seemed to track straight. I don't think the axels are bend or the frame is damaged.

I don't know if the lights work, but they don't look damaged. This is another thing I could easily test in the daylight. I did not see any damage to the lights or the connectors.

The trailer is definitely not rusted out, but it is also not in like-new condition. There is light rust on most of the unpainted surfaces and, as I mentioned, the winch is somewhat more rusted.

I have not looked closely at the boat cradle. Do you have any suggestions on how to confirm its serviceability without actually putting a boat on it? I don't have access to any boats.

I would think it would do OK on the road, but i don't know when the wheel bearings were last repacked, so I would not want to take it on a 1000-mile trip without performing some service on it.

We are in Walden, VT, in the northeast part of the sate. If you look it up on MapQuest, you get closer by using West Danville.

I checked on eBay and found only one Holsclaw trailer for sale. I think it is a 900-lb model and it is selling for around $200-$300. I did not realize that NADA does boat trailers. I'll check it out.
