hole on top of water pump?

87 bayliner/2.3l ford. <br /><br />should the water pump have a small hole about 3-4 inches from where the pulley hooks up? i can see down it & see the shaft spinning. it is definitley machined, i just cant remember seeing it before i started taking this thing apart. also i "found" a small spring (almost like in a ball point pen but shorter) and a metal dowel, it is a bit smaller than that hole in the pump though. so im not sure if is shot out of there.... where could this possibly be from? thanks as always

That is called a "weep" hole. <br /><br />There is a seal on each side of it. If any coolant is leaking out of it, it is there to tell you that one of the seals is not doing its job.
