So I just bought a used engine (a y2000 Honda BF8A), and it was having water pump problems. I took apart the lower unit and replaced the impeller and gaskets. When I was doing this, the metal edge that the gaskets seal broke away a tiny bit. I don't know what any of these places are called, so I'll describe where it is.

The water comes in through an intake screen and flows through the gaskets and into an area underneath the gaskets, where a rubber donut separtes the oil of the lower unit from the pump system. It is this edge, just below where the gaskets seal and above the donut, that broke away a bit (about the size of small fish scale).

My question is, what can I do to fix this problem. Do I need to take the lower unit to a repair place and get a weld on that, or does someone know any cheaper/better way of fixing it? Is there some metal compound that you can apply as a liquid, and then hardens? Can I reform the wall with some marine sealent from 3m? I was thinking that since it is in the wall at the primary/coldest part of the cooling system, I could just get away with plugging the hole with sealent.

Any advice?

Best - Bryan
