I am going to be taking off my old 150 Johnson engine and installing a 175 evinrude. It appears that the only way to hoist the engine is by attaching a chain to 3 holes that are on top of the flywheel. Is this the correct way to do this? Thanks, Jake

Re: Hoisting engine question

You can do it that way if you feel brave. Theres a lifting ring that bolts to the flywheel thats normally used. This is assuming you are removing a 150 crossflow.

Be careful, good luck!

Re: Hoisting engine question

The lifting ring from OMC bolts onto the flywheel using these three holes. You can also use a harmonic balancer puller from any autoparts store (a lot cheaper). Be carefull with the bolts as you dont want to screw them in too far or you may damage the pickup coils etc that are under the flywheel, usually 1/2" is sufficient. The OMC bolts have sholders on them to prevent too deep insertion. As these bolts have high tensile strength it might be worth getting them from your OMC dealer.

If you want extra safty you can use a strong strap or rope around the motor and mid ssection just in case something gives way.
