Our hoarder's haunt:
Items no longer used in our house find their way out to the garage where they will marinate for a few years. They will then be transferred up into the 30 X 30 ft. loft space above the garage.
I ventured into this cavern of clutter today to locate whatever I was looking for. Once up there, I tripped over our collection of tomato cages and assorted pieces of chicken wire. Chicken wire? We've never even owned chickens. I think we got the chicken wire to make up tomato cages. So why then do we have 28 tomato cages?
Enough was enough. I started throwing stuff down onto the garage floor so I could pre-sort items(junk) before I throw stuff out.
One item was a rusted, metal pail shop vac that has been hidden up there for at least 15 years. Out of curiosity I plugged it in to see what would happen. Is smoke supposed to come out of the top?
So far I've filled up 5 big trash cans of junk and will now transfer the tomato cages out to our other shed out back.
I guess I'll repeat this process out in the back shed in another 15 years.

I sure know how you feel, it goes from the house to the garage to the shed and then eventually ends up in the back of the truck either heading to the dump or the salvation army! Unfortunately that process takes at least 15 years!

I thought it went from the house to the garage to the attic to the shop and back to the attic again. I have lots of things I really should part with. But for some strange reason I can't bring myself to throw away good usable items. I have gotten better with doing that recently, but some of the things are pretty valuable to the right person. I would offer them up to the local goodwill, but most of the items are too technical for them to actual want.

Hey maybe it was dust and not smoke. Duct tape will fix the rust holes.

I've amassed quite a bit of old metal things. I look at my stuff (mess) and wonder what I may use. Probably will only use 10% of the stuff if I live long enough but the problem is I don't know which 10%.

My wife has more stuff in the house and garage than I do but I have her beat in the shop. I need to go through things again so I can discover what I have. Sometimes I need to buy something that I already have but forgot. Most of the time I can still recall I have something then the search begins and often takes as much time as the project if not more. :)

With all this stuff, I still have to make trips to the store for the right things.

With all the things I'd like to do, I'll need to live to be 100. Maybe 120 at the rate I'm going.

I can easily understand that. One thing I still think is interesting is when I am building a project and need four part all the same, I can usually find three, but never all four. So I still have to buy one. And hoarding things doesn't always mean saving money either.

It seems that EVERY TIME I go on a "declutter" tirade, the next week I need something that I cleaned out of the house/garage the week before! That is why I keep telling the wife I can't part with things ... I HATE buying what I threw/gave away last week!

Oh I do have a interesting story about that scenario. I was looking for my chainsaw to cut up a few fallen trees, and of course I couldn't find it anywhere. I looked everywhere and just couldn't find it. So I went a bought a new one. As I was removing the new one from the box, I look across and there in plan sight sits my old chainsaw in perfect view. How I was able to over looked it before is anybody's guess. So I gave my old one to my son.

That happens to me all the time minus the going out and buying whatever new. I have to ask the admiral or my son to look for an item for me. Yep, there it was right before my eyes.

Years and years ago when I was still an employed pharmacist we were cleaning out a junk draw and I threw out one black shoelace. Yep, two days later I needed one black shoelace.
