I have a 1982 Johnson 25hp. I am trying to remove the nuts that hold the powerhead to the lower cover/exhaust housing. The nuts are positioned beneath the powerhead, one on each side. There is little clearance from the top of the bolt to the powerhead and it is very tight. I cannot use a wrench or a ratchet. The nut must be accessed at an angle. I tried using a flexing socket and it fit, but as the nut is loosened the socket gets stuck.

Can someone who has removed the powerhead on a model like this one tell me what tool they used?? I am also building everything to spec (using a torque wrench to re-assemble) so how will I get the proper torque when I put it back together????

OMC built a special tool for this but you can also get a long 1/2" box end wrench, heat it till it's red hot and bend it to fit. Don't worry about the torque when putting it back together. Just make sure it's tight.

The factory has a special tool for those nuts, but you can get various shaped distributor wrenches at an auto supply store that can fit in that small space.
