Hello all,
I am new to this forum and boating. I have read responses to others questions and can see there is much knowledge on the iboats forums. Which is great for people like me looking for answers.
My question is about tow hitches. I own a 1994, K1500 Blazer, 4wd. I am going to be towing a 19'6" 1989 Maxum Two Thousand, dry weight 2100 lbs. I currently have the acme bolt on bumper class III hitch rated at 5000 lbs, max tongue 500 lbs, sold at Cabelas. I used this set up to tow a pop up camper with no problems, weight much less.
Do you think this would be o.k. to tow my boat? If not would a class III bolt on frame hitch be fine?
Thanks in advance for all your information.:)

Re: Hitch question

2100# wouldn't be a problem, but when you add in other weight like fuel, supplies and trailer, you'll be getting a bit higher up there. I am not a fan of any Bumper mounted hitch, for the few extra bucks, a frame mounted hitch would really be worth it.

Re: Hitch question

frame mount definately, and trailer brakes are an absolute necessity with that tow vehicle.

Re: Hitch question

Thanks for the response. That's pretty much what I figured. So I am going to install a Class III with a 6000 lb rating.

Re: Hitch question

That's what I'd do. And take td's advice and make sure you have trailer brakes and they work. Shorter wheelbase vehicles, like Blazers, Jeeps, can provide some great "we're all going to die" moments stopping heavy loads...

Re: Hitch question

You are going to much better off getting a class 3 frame mounted hitch, we had a rear bumper just about fall off while pulling a 4 place snowmobile trailer fully loaded, that was a scary moment!!! the safety chains and ball are all 1 piece on the bumper, you loose the bumper you loose your trailer.
I had a Reese class 3 hitch on my old 88 chev k1500, it installed without drilling any holes and looked great!

Re: Hitch question

Thanks for all the great advice!
I ordered a Hidden Hitch class III/IV hitch today and will receive it this week and install it. Removed my other hitch today.
The trailer has brakes and has been completely checked out and is ready to go!
I am looking forward to being a member on this forum. Everyone here has a wealth of knowledge for a newbie;)
