Hitch height question.

I know its best to have the correct height to make the trailer level. But I dont have a boat yet and I also dont have the hitch part that goes into the 2" receiver box. Right now as it stands, the top edge of this box is only 11" from the ground. I know that I need some sort of step up adapter. What is a good height to start with for general purpose single axle stuff, like a 17' boat trailer or utility trailer? Is 19" or 20" about standard? Also, where do you take this measurement from, the top of the ball or the top of the tongue? Also, whats the most common ball size for that kind of stuff, 2"? Thanks.

Re: Hitch height question.

Find the boat first, Carbuff, then just measure how high the ball is when the trailer is level. 12" to 14" are pretty common.

In 17' boat trailers both 1-7/8" and 2" ball sockets are common.

Yeah, finding the boat first would be the best. Im just trying to get it set up so that if I see an ad for a free or cheap boat that I like I could just go and grab it.
Also, how is that measurement taken, from the top of the ball or to the base of the ball. Theres like a 2 " difference in those measurements.

CarBuf,
I think this link has the answers you seek.
http://www.etrailer.com/faq/ballmount.asp

You can spend the big bucks for an adjustable height ballmount or start out with a $20 2" drop ballmount which is very universal.
I find the adjustable units to be too bulky and in the way.

The 2" drop will work at have on hand when you find that bargin boat. At least long enough to get the boat home.

Holy cow look what else you can get.

A wireless camera that looks like a license plate frame part and a LCD monitor for the cab. So you can backup to the trailer by yourself.

$100 bucks!

Gotta have it do I do I do, honey, honey!.
