Well we only had the boat for about 7-8 months we got it last fall and only driven it 3 times last week and twice this week. Unfortunately we hit a rock going pretty fast it broke the skeg off and the prop is a bit dented. The bullet has a hole in it and it is fairly cracked. I was thinking of filling that hole up with something if its possible? then just put on a skeggard and buy a new prop? Not sure please help. :(

Re: Hit rock with lower unit

Sounds like a new lower unit to me. It's had water in it and probably some damage to bearings and other critical alignments. Seems like it's pretty well shot IMO.

I would take it into a boat shop and just have them look at it to give you an idea of what you need to do. Pictures are always helpful when looking for help here..Good luck..

Welcome to iboats.

Sounds like you are in need of a replacement lower unit. Keep in mind the upper gear box and lower unit share the same oil. As long as the drive wasn't run long with out oil, wasn't run in salt, and has since been dried out, you may be able to get away with just replacing the lower for now. If you attempt some half @$$ed repair on the lower unit, you may be putting the entire drive in jeopardy of failure.

You never mentioned which OMC drive you have. Is it an older model stringer ('85 and older), a cobra, or a king cobra?
If it's a stringer or cobra, you should be able to come up with a new lower unit for it. If it's a king cobra, be prepared to possibly fork over big bucks for a rare bird if and when you find it.

Its a cobra 1989 thanks guys for the help we drove it about 3-4 hours afterwards because we didnt know that there was a huge hole in the lower unit. most of the green oil drained out. we took a look on the top gears and none of it broke. What luck we had there. So theres no way in fixing this besides buying a new lower unit?

No way I would recommend. Some people have cracks welded by a Helli-arc welder in non essential areas (no bearings near by) with great success. When you talk about holes though, I wouldn't be comfortable with anything else but a replacement lower.

It's your drive though. If you think you can get away with plugging a hole somehow, all the power to you! :)

If it's a Cobra, look at replacing the whole thing with a SEI & get a warranty plus something you can get readily available parts for.

Btw, water isn't a lubricant ;)

Would the skeg gard protect it from future rock collisions if i replace the Lower unit? If i do replace it i dont want to end up breaking it again by accident.

Nothing you put on the drive is going to make it rock proof. Skeg guards are only gunna stop damage from happening from something like a very low speed drag on the bottom. Your drive is only going to be as Strong as the aluminum it was cast out of.

Like Super cautioned too, the drive manufacturer doesn't specify H2O weight gear oil for the drive. If you can get away with just replacing the lower (your upper isn't toasty) consider your self lucky.
