hit-n-miss gasket kits...application charts?

1989 80hp (3 cyl)Merc

I recently went through my carbs and just prior to reassembly noticed that each kit I ordered ("7211-1 86-up Carb Kit w/Needle L3-L4 Mercury OE#1395-9595-1") contained two cover gaskets and only one mounting gasket. Of course, I needed two mounting gaskets and only one cover gasket each...What's up with that? Went to NAPA and some automotive thermostat gaskets matched the mounting gaskets pretty well...used them between the cover plate and carbs.

Next, I ordered an impeller kit. Got to inspecting the plastic water pump base and found several of the silicone seals looked sketchy. In aligning things for reassembly, I noticed one of the gaskets in the kit didn't align with some of the ports in the plastic base plate...checked the old gasket and whoever had been in there before me must have gotten the same rebuild kit--didn't look like a good seal at all. Apparantly Merc used two different bases: one was aluminum, one plastic with silicone seals. The plastic one mates directly with the metal impeller base plate...ie, no gasket.

Well, I ordered the "complete" water pump kit (RL 12094/OEM 46-43024A6) and will see what I get...but I mated the plastic part to the base plate and installed it all, only without loctite or the RTV sealant...idled it in the driveway and if it peed like a racehorse before, it pees like a racehorse on steroids now!

However, water wells up the hole in the cavitation plate in front of the shifter shaft, and sprays/gurgles out of the horizontal slots aft of the cavitation plate, so I'm reluctant to take it out until I get a new (and hopefully correct) pump kit in.

Has anybody else had problems finding the proper water pump gaskets for these things? The Seloc manual indicates that there are indeed two styles, but none of the application charts I've run across seem to indicate this.

Thanks for the tip, Ed Mc. Tried each...

"Mercury Parts Express is not available for this serial number(0C163865)." Hmm.

Sierra had some stuff available, but none of the water pump/impeller items: The items not marked "n/a" led me to a "Sorry, no items found for that part number" message.

I've been looking at http://www.nicksoutboardmarine.com/newpartscatalog.html often--enlargable catalog pages and application charts.

Also, http://www.biggerhammer.net/mercury/factory_manuals/Service_Manual_Index.html lists some part numbers and most repair procedures.

...working on this outboard kind of reminds me of rebuilding a 1961 Nash Metropolitan...

FK99,

A few issues here.

1. Seloc manual. Bin it and buy a factory manual.
2. Aftermarket parts kits. These kits try to be all things to all men (engines), but usually end up being useless for everybody.

As for
However, water wells up the hole in the cavitation plate in front of the shifter shaft, and sprays/gurgles out of the horizontal slots aft of the cavitation plate.
There should be 3 gaskets. One of the gaskets on the base to gear housing, one gasket below the S/S plate, and a gasket between the plate and the impeller housing. Lack of a gasket between the plate and the impeller housing could account for your observations of the excess water inside the housing.

Have fun.

Chris.............

For parts you could also try
www.mercruiserparts.com/selectDocs.asp?doc_nbr=+18520

Thanks, achris. Is the printed form of the factory manual any more explicit than the online version?

I have a Seloc: "Some 3- and 4- cylinder late models may have a modified gear housing to accept a new plastic water pump base. On early model gear housings the water pump base is metal and made of aluminum. The advantage of the new plastic base is a silicone impregnated seal molded on both sides for sealing the base and eliminating the gaskets."

--how it was:
6. cover (w/ impeller)
5. cover gasket
4. plate
3. gasket
2. plastic base
1. gasket
...the #1 and #5 gaskets looked fine, but the #3 gasket was causing the silicone seals in the plastic base to run from a gasketed surface to a non-gasketed surface--no way that was a good seal.

--should be (according to Seloc):
4. cover
3. cover gasket
2. plate
1. base

--I did:
5. cover
4. cover gasket
3. plate
2. base
1. gasket
...mainly because of the rough surface the base mounts to. I'm guessing that base needs to be replaced--those seals weren't in such great shape.

Anyway, I won't run it until next week, when the complete kit arrives. I'll post a follow up...

Resolved. Ran out today with splendid performance and no warning alarms. The carbs neede to be reset at one point, but did well after that...right now they're at 1.25 out from lightly seated...and it idles, and revs up, and settels into idle easily.

And no more warning alarms. Rebuilt the water pump and it looked golden on the muffs; in the water, the head was cooler than I knew was possible.

Thank you all very much for your input; you give a guy hope and practical advice--an unbeatable combination.

--mja
