I have recently purchased a boat with what Im told is a 70's model (possibly 76) merc 4cyl 65hp outboard. I dont have the boat yet but Ive been reading up on the older motors. I notice that Mercury apparently made a 65hp in both 3 and 4cyl versions around the same time. Does anybody know for sure if mercury made outboards with 3 and 4cyl versions in the same years with same hp? Is there a particular advantage to one over the other?
Thanks much

Re: History Lesson

Mercury made the 4 cylinder 65 (650) from 1963 thru 1971... The 3 cylinder 65 (650) was from 1972 thru 1976...

Re: History Lesson

Trying to get this thing to work, wouldnt let me post a reply some stupid error msg.. ANYWAY
Snapperbait, Is there any advantage to the 4cyl over 3cyl? I bought a 76 boat and 65hp merc. I assumed (wrongly) that the motor was probably same age as boat but apparently isnt. It is a 4cyl probably a 70 or 71 model not sure.

Re: History Lesson

My dad was a dealer until 1971 we bought a 65 hp 3 cyl dad always swore that the 80 hp 4 cyl used LESS gass than the 3 banger 65. I would think the 4 banger would have a bit more tourqe and be smoother.
