hinge pin thread size

hi guys i have a mercruiser 1 s/n 5599854 and i have managed to get hinge pin out but i need to re-thread the bell housing and all marine shops over here are more interested in selling than actually helping so my question is
Q: what size tap do i get to re-thread????

well i still have no joy i have contacted a lot of mercruiser dealers here in the UK and all they want to do is sell me a new bellhousing
she is sitting there with all new bellows, trim limit senders, hinge pins the works(thanks to jhal) ready to go back together but i cant anyone know????

ok heres what i got so far
the thread on the hinge pin is 5/8 - 18 ok i understand the 5/8 but what does the 18 mean????

-18 is the pitch.... meaning there are 18 threads per inch.

and will this do the trick HSS 5/8" X 18 TPI UNF TAP 2ND CUT TAP
or do you guys in the states use UNC???/
